Announcement

After working on my game, I started thinking about new ideas. I've already managed to generate a similar canyon-styled road like the one in the very first Test Drive, so the jump to actually recreating the game is pretty small.

I'm going to use my very own Outrun engine which I will adapt to get a slower paced driving experience. Right now I'm trying to simulate both rear and front wheels, so I can divide the brake force between the front and rear wheels. This way the front wheels won't lock up anymore while downshifting without rev matching.

The steering will be completely redone. In the Outrun clone the car follows the road, but veers to the left and right. In Test Drive the car actually turns. Digital controls will probably be similar to the controls in Test Drive 2: The Duel, while I'm still figuring out how I'm going to do the analog controls. It feels like crap right now.

What I'd like to recreate:

  • Get a similar driving experience to the one in Test Drive 2: The Duel, with some improvements of course
  • Cars should have some decent engine and tire sounds
  • Choose one of the 5 cars that were included in the first game
  • Drive from the dealership to different gas stations and back
  • When going too fast, the police will chase you

What I'd like to add:

  • Day and night cycle
  • Not really having to stop at the gas station, but risking running out of gas
  • Unlocking cars and locations
  • Weather perhaps
  • Steering wheel support with 3 pedals & h-pattern shifter (with a dog-leg shift pattern in certain cars)
